This painting by Vicki Anderson was completed last year. The color defines the work. Vicki was able to keep all of the color clear by layering and by using wet into wet techniques for the background and table. I love this painting. The light in the vase is delicately preserved while being heavily charged with color which gives it form. Color moves all over this painting from cool to warm with fiery reds and oranges. Everything in this wonderful painting defines watercolor as a versatile and sophisticated medium.

In this painting by  Vicki Anderson we see similar techniques used in the heavy use of water, layering and lifting. The heavy use of water allows for a very loose almost wet into wet painting. I love her color palette. Each fold of the fabric gives rich deep color and grounds the pitcher as the tablecloth moves across foreground of the painting. The gorgeous color in the background wash ings drama to the abstract form of the pitcher and tablecloth.

"Pitcher and Mexican Blanket" Kay McCuen, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

"Pitcher and Mexican Blanet" is a still life work by Kay Mccuen. Kay is a sophisticated watercolor artist and has been working in watercolor for 20 yrs. Kay uses a limited palette and works in muted tones. The blanket moves across the edge of the table, yet is grounded by the pitcher which gives the painting a direct focal point. Her compositions are solid and powerful, yet there is a very soft feeling to the painting due to the very wet, fluid nature of the background washes she uses.

"Douglas County State Lake" Kay McCuen, Lumberyard Art Center Baldwin City, KS

I love Kay's fast, emotive painting of the lake. The lake is well loved in the area. We have  seen it go through changes from  morning light to evening light and we have seen the mists rise off the surface as the temperature changes throughout the day. This painting thoroughly captures the rapidly changing nature of our lake. Watercolor is a perfect medium for this very intimate, yet dramatic mystical painting.

This is another wonderful painting by Kay McCuen. The colors are muted and there is a windswept feeling to the whole scene bought about by the movement in the trees in the background and the rolling earth leading up from the stream bed. The bright white of the barn gives us the idea of a stark, cold winter.

Green Vase and Red Fabric Sandy Cardens, Lumberyard Art Center Baldwin City KS

This is an amazing demonstration of a beautiful fabric study completed by Sandy Cardens. Sandy is the gallery director at the Lumberyard Art Center, and is a highly skilled watercolor artist. The fabric moves and flows like a landscape. There is great depth in the fabric which create a powerful back drop for the vase. The vase has incredible textures created by using wet into wet watercolor techniques and simple lifting with a paper towel. Sandy maintained all of the necessary lights in both the fabric and the vase which created coherence in the painting.

"Forest Light", Molly Hilton, Turchin Center for the Arts, Boone, NC

"Forest Light" is a lovely acrylic painting by Molly Hilton. The painting was completed on location in Green Valley Park outside of Boone, North Carolina. Molly used wonderful texture and color to capture the planes in the rocks and to achieve perspective in the painting as we look through the forest to the light that is cast through the trees. Delicate forest flowers are expressed in hints of white in the underbrush. I love the color and reach of the tree to the right in this painting.
