"Spring Flowers in Vase"Sharon Spence, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

This was the final piece in the floral series for Sharon. This painting was completed after a series of one minute 30 second studies. The drama takes place between the lights and darks in the Iris and the bold use of yellow providing complimentary color and a focal point for the painting. I love the highly charged areas of deep purple and the mastery of the broad, loose brush strokes. Sharon was able to achieve mastery with the material after working through the studies. This painting is alive with color and movement. I love the off centered nature of the vase and the purple Iris that cascades over its edge.

"Still Life Florals"Sharon Spence, Lawrence Art Center, Lawerence, KS

Sharon's work during the one minute 30 second watercolor studies gave her a remarkable sense of the medium and brought fulfillment of the experience between painter, medium and subject. This painting was created during the warm up sessions. Broad fast strokes of color moving quickly with a very wet paper provided her with a clear and simple understanding of how watercolor works. I love the movement and the clear color in this highly expressive painting.

"Study for Pitcher #2"Sharon Spence, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

In this second painting in the series we see dynamic color moving into more defined forms. The precise details of this lovely painting is left up to the viewer. The image is full of large, rapid brush strokes that evoke images of Japanese Sumi painting. The time frame for this piece was one minute 30 seconds. Sharon continued exploring the silence of her own individual creative intelligence and we can see this in her work. The drama takes place in the combined use of burnt sienna and cobalt blue.

"Pitcher" Sharon Spence, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence KS

This is the final piece in Sharon's "Pitcher"Series. We can see how the very quick studies kept the emotions  moving in each painting. In this final work Sharon used all of her emotive power to create this final piece. In a stoic pitcher we see everything. We see movement, color, and the dramatic play of darks and lights. The form of the pitcher grounds all of the lovely color work. The beautiful transparency of watercolor was not lost in this very powerful final painting.

"Vase" Vicki Anderson, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

This painting by Vicki Anderson was completed last year. The color defines the work. Vicki was able to keep all of the color clear by layering and by using wet into wet techniques for the background and table. I love this painting. The light in the vase is delicately preserved while being heavily charged with color which gives it form. Color moves all over this painting from cool to warm with fiery reds and oranges. Everything in this wonderful painting defines watercolor as a versatile and sophisticated medium.

"Pitcher and Fabric" Vicki Anderson, Lawerence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

In this painting by  Vicki Anderson we see similar techniques used in the heavy use of water, layering and lifting. The heavy use of water allows for a very loose almost wet into wet painting. I love her color palette. Each fold of the fabric gives rich deep color and grounds the pitcher as the tablecloth moves across foreground of the painting. The gorgeous color in the background wash ings drama to the abstract form of the pitcher and tablecloth.

"Pitcher and Mexican Blanket" Kay McCuen, Lawrence Art Center, Lawrence, KS

"Pitcher and Mexican Blanet" is a still life work by Kay Mccuen. Kay is a sophisticated watercolor artist and has been working in watercolor for 20 yrs. Kay uses a limited palette and works in muted tones. The blanket moves across the edge of the table, yet is grounded by the pitcher which gives the painting a direct focal point. Her compositions are solid and powerful, yet there is a very soft feeling to the painting due to the very wet, fluid nature of the background washes she uses.

"Douglas County State Lake" Kay McCuen, Lumberyard Art Center Baldwin City, KS

I love Kay's fast, emotive painting of the lake. The lake is well loved in the area. We have  seen it go through changes from  morning light to evening light and we have seen the mists rise off the surface as the temperature changes throughout the day. This painting thoroughly captures the rapidly changing nature of our lake. Watercolor is a perfect medium for this very intimate, yet dramatic mystical painting.

"Winter Farm" Kay McCuen, Lumberyard Art Center, Baldwin City, KS

This is another wonderful painting by Kay McCuen. The colors are muted and there is a windswept feeling to the whole scene bought about by the movement in the trees in the background and the rolling earth leading up from the stream bed. The bright white of the barn gives us the idea of a stark, cold winter.

Green Vase and Red Fabric Sandy Cardens, Lumberyard Art Center Baldwin City KS

This is an amazing demonstration of a beautiful fabric study completed by Sandy Cardens. Sandy is the gallery director at the Lumberyard Art Center, and is a highly skilled watercolor artist. The fabric moves and flows like a landscape. There is great depth in the fabric which create a powerful back drop for the vase. The vase has incredible textures created by using wet into wet watercolor techniques and simple lifting with a paper towel. Sandy maintained all of the necessary lights in both the fabric and the vase which created coherence in the painting.
